چکیده

In combinatorics of words, a concatenation of k consecutive equal blocks is called a power of order k. In this paper we take a different point of view and define an anti-power of order k as a concatenation of k consecutive pairwise distinct blocks of the same length. As a main result, we show that every infinite word contains powers of any order or anti-powers of any order. That is, the existence of powers or anti-powers is an unavoidable regularity. Indeed, we prove a stronger result, which relates the density of anti-powers to the existence of a factor that occurs with arbitrary exponent. From these results, we derive that at every position of an aperiodic uniformly recurrent word start anti-powers of any order. We further show that any infinite word avoiding anti-powers of order 3 is ultimately periodic, and that there exist aperiodic words avoiding anti-powers of order 4. We also show that there exist aperiodic recurrent words avoiding anti-powers of order 6, and leave open the question whether there exist aperiodic recurrent words avoiding anti-powers of order k for k = 4, 5. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.4.3 Formal Languages

On some sets of dictionaries whose ω-powers have a given complexity

A dictionary is a set of finite words over some finite alphabet X. The ω-power of a dictionary V is the set of infinite words obtained by infinite concatenation of words in V . Lecomte studied in [1] the complexity of the set of dictionaries whose associated ω-powers have a given complexity. In particular, he considered the sets W(Σ0k) (respectively, W(Π 0 k), W(∆ 1 1)) of dictionaries V ⊆ 2 ⋆ ...

Abelian Repetitions in Partial Words∗

We study abelian repetitions in partial words, or sequences that may contain some unknown positions or holes. First, we look at the avoidance of abelian pth powers in infinite partial words, where p > 2, extending recent results regarding the case where p = 2. We investigate, for a given p, the smallest alphabet size needed to construct an infinite partial word with finitely or infinitely many ...

Powers in a class of A-strict standard episturmian words

This paper concerns a specific class of strict standard episturmian words whose directive words resemble those of characteristic Sturmian words. In particular, we explicitly determine all integer powers occurring in such infinite words, extending recent results of Damanik and Lenz (2003), who studied powers in Sturmian words. The key tools in our analysis are canonical decompositions and a gene...

The operation V → V ω is a fundamental operation over finitary languages leading to ω-languages. Since the set Σ of infinite words over a finite alphabet Σ can be equipped with the usual Cantor topology, the question of the topological complexity of ω-powers of finitary languages naturally arises and has been posed by Niwinski [Niw90], Simonnet [Sim92] and Staiger [Sta97a]. It has been recently...
